- Curriculum vitae of Jose Luis Martin Esquivel.PhD in Biology and a member of technical staff of the Government of Canary Islands where he has pursued various responsibilities for the past 19 years. Has been Head of Protected Areas, Head of Biodiversity Conservation and, currently, is the Director of the Observatory of Sustainable Development, belonging to the Canary Agency of Climate Change. His academic background are in the University of La Laguna where was ascribed to the Department of Animal Biology for over 15 years. Since 1990 he has developed a varied activity in different areas of nature conservation, as are the planning of protected areas, endangered species recovery and monitoring conservation programs. His main research is mainly focused on the biology and ecology of the Macaronesian archipelagos. He has made scientific expeditions in all these regions and contributed to the discovery of many new species, describing a score of taxa in several groups of cavernicolous arthropods (arachnid, insect and crustacea). He has published 94 articles in scientific journals and book chapters on the topics of geology, biospeleology, taxonomy, ecology, and biodiversity conservation. He has participated in two dozen research projects, having led or co-led a dozen of them, mostly under European cofinancing. In the past decade was the promoter for the development of the first global checklists of the taxonomic biodiversity of Canary Islands and Cape Verde Islands. For this aim, he contributed at the design and development of the software Atlantis, which is a basic tool to record and make biogeographic analysis related with the taxonomic biodiversity of these archipelagos. In the nineties was the coordinator of the first academic master of environmental actions to train experts in protected area management and environmental impact assessment, which was held in Canaries. It regularly teaches courses on the conservation biology and use of informatics tools for the conservation of nature. As environmental manager has been consulter in the development of various laws of nature conservation in the Canary Islands.
